5 Wonderful Things of Allahabad

Allahabad is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh which is situated on the confluence of three sacred rivers: Yamuna, Ganges and the mystical Sarasvati (which has dried up). The city also holds historical and religious importance. Here are 5 wonderful things about this city that one should know:

1. The most astonishing fact about this city is that it is known to be the second oldest living city in the world. The city which today is one of the most populous city in the state was the homeland to Aryans. It is said that it was the Aryans who came up with the name, ❛Prayaga❜ for the city of Allahabad. The name was derived from one of the Sages that lived in the Vedic period and the ❛name❜ means the place of offerings.
2. There was a change in the name of the city that was done in the Mughal Period. The mighty Mughal Emperor Akbar himself came up with the name ❛Illahabad❜ back in 1575. Intimidated by the beauty and purity of this place he then decided to build a fort on the bank of river Ganges. This fort was later inhabited by the Marathas and was recaptured by the Nawabs of Lucknow in the 18th century.


3. This city is also known as the city of Prime Ministers. This is beacuse seven out of thirteen prime ministers of our nation were born and brought up in this holy city. Not only this, they were the alumni of Allahabad University and were elected from the constituency of Allahabad.


4. Maha Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years takes place in the holy city of Allahabad. The Mela is considered to be the largest peace and religious gathering. A total of approximately 120 million people visited the Mela over 2 months with the highest response of 10 million in a day recorded for 2013.


5. The first airmail service was considered to be initiated in the city. It is due to the fact that the first commercial Civil Line is situated between Allahabad and Naini in 1911.So these were the 5 wonderful facts about this beautiful city.
